About Our Certifications

We take pride in our certifications.  Our roasting facility is certified organic, which is one of the few in NJ!  We are also Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance certified and Bird Friendly.  Below are brief descriptions of each certification, but to learn more about our certifications, check out our blog post on them here.

Certified Organic – Beans must be grown using no synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances for at least three years and the farm must follow a sustainable crop rotation plan.  The certification does not stop there, the roasting facility also needs to meet certain standards in order for the roasted coffee to be labeled organic.

Fair Trade – It provides farmers in developing nations the tools to thrive as international business people.  Instead of creating dependency on aid, Fair Trade USA uses a market-based approach that gives farmers fair prices, workers safe conditions, and entire communities resources for fair, healthy and sustainable lives.

Rainforest Alliance Certified – The standards are intended to protect the environment and the rights of workers.  The basic guidelines are called the Sustainable Agriculture Standard and additional specific rules apply to coffee producers.  Coffee farms must maintain or restore natural forest cover to achieve 40% shade coverage.  The standard calls for at least 70 trees per hectare (about 2.5 acres) and at least 12 native species.

Bird Friendly – Bird Friendly is a certification created by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC), which is part of the National Zoo based in Washington, D.C. Bird Friendly standards are the strictest of the third-party environmental standards. The SMBC requires that producers meet the requirements for organic certification first, and then meet additional criteria to ensure they are maintaing the forest cover that provides habitat for birds and other wildlife. The additional standards, however, require a minimum of 40 percent shade coverage and also make recommendations for the diversity and size of trees that make up the forest canopy. These standards ensure a variety of habitats that supports a wealth of wildlife.

We also sponsor New Jersey Conservation Foundation’s Coffee and Conservation.  Enjoy a hot cup of coffee before heading out to the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center in search of birds, butterflies, wildflowers and much much more!  The New Jersey Conservation Foundation is located in Far Hills, NJ and their mission is to preserve land and natural resources throughout New Jersey for the benefit of all.
